Astaxanthin is an ultra powerful antioxidant. Astaxanthin is up to 500 times stronger as an antioxidant than vitamin E and up to 10 times more powerful than beta-carotene. Although similar to the better-known antioxident Beta-Carotene, slight differences in the structure of Astaxanthin cause radical differences in activity. Unique aspects of the Astaxanthin structure allow it to pass the blood brain barrier, meaning it can deliver antioxident benefits directly to the brain and central nervouse sysytem. Astaxanthin is the pink carotenoid that gives salmon, crabs, shrimp and flamingos their color because these animals eat microorganisms that contain large quantities of it. Like other carotenoids, astaxanthin has proven to be a remarkably effective fatsoluble antioxidant.
